Squeak 4.0 finally done [Update]

The Squeak community has been very busy inmany areas over the last few years. But one of the hardest, most complicated and time-consuming task was the release of a fully MIT-licenced release. This would be an important step towards a membership in the Free Software Foundation. Software Freedom Conservacy.

This seems to be achieved now.

[Update] The Squeak website has been updated to link to 4.0. Squeak 4.0 is also available for donwload on the ftp site.

So if you’re looking for an open source Smalltalk with a deliberate licence that’s also safe for commercial use, you now have two options: squeak and pharo (which is a fork of Squeak).

[Update] But be warned: Squeak 4.0 is just 3.10.2 with all its bugs and problems, just relicenced under MIT and Apache Licences. If you want a stable release with real new functionality, you may want to wait for 4.1.
