STIC’12 presentations: videos will soon be online, STIC’13 will be in June

The Smalltalk Industry Conference 2012 in Biloxi is over. Judging from the list of talks and James’ Blog Posts it was a very interesting event.

Smalltalk Inspect Episode 14: Adriaan van Os on VAStGoodies and Smalltalk in the Netherlands

In our latest episode of the Smalltalk Inspect we not only practice our english but also talk to Adriaan van Os from the Netherlands. Adriaan is known for his photo coverage of all major Smalltalk events during the past years, but more importantly as one of the main contributors to the VAStGoodies server, the primary place to share open source code for VA Smalltalk.

He tells us about his work on VAStGoodies.com and the use of Seaside and Smalltalk at Delta Lloyd (the company that sponsors the server infrastructure of VAStGoodies), one of the biggest insurance companies in the world. Besides that we talk about the Smalltalk community in the Netherlands and the “Back to the Future” initiative which works on making Smalltalk better known in other dynamic language communities and will be presenting at the Smalltalk devroom this coming Sunday at the FOSDEM conference in Brussels, Belgium.

Smalltalk Inspect 13: Esther Mietzsch über Squeak und den deutschen Squeak-Verein

In unserer neuesten Episode des Smalltalk Inspect Podcast sprechen wir mit Esther Mietzsch über den Squeak Deutschland eV und seine Arbeit mit, an und rund um Squeak auch aber nicht nur in Deutschland.

Zudem sprechen wir über den Einsatz von eToys im Schulunterricht und die Frage, wie und wo man sich mit interessierten und bereits erfahrenen Lehrern oder Eltern austauschen kann, die schonmal Squeak und/oder eToys im Unterricht oder einer AG eingesetzt haben.

Ganz nebenbei erfahren wir auch, dass es zu diesem Themenkomplex bald zwei komplett neue, deutschsprachige Bücher aus deutschen Landen geben wird.

SmalltalkInspect Episode 12 in english: Continuous Integration in VA Smalltalk

We’ve just released our episode 12 of the Smalltalk Inspect Podcast. This is our first attempt at doing an episode in english and it’s an extremely interesting chat with Thomas Koschate who shares some of his knowledge in the field of Continuous Integration in a VA Smalltalk project.

If you’ve wondered whether you can use VA Smalltalk in conjunction with CI servers like Hudson, Jenkins or Cruise Control, you should definitely listen to this episode. Once again the episode is a bit longer than we’d love them to be, but there was nothing we could cut out without stealing important and interesting information from our listeners…

Smalltalk Inspect Episode 11: Smalltalk in den Charts

We’ve just released Episode 11 of our german-spoken Smalltalk-related Podcast Smalltalk Inspect. This time we interviewed Christian Haider of Smalltalked Visuals about their product smallCharts that produces print-ready charts for newspapers right out of feeds like Bloomberg and Reuters, and about the pdf-creation and analysis framework pdf4smalltalk which is an important part of it. pdf4smalltalk is open sourced and available on Cincom’s public Store repository.

We cover a lot of other interesting stuff from unit testing, the burden of working alone in software development, automatic build processes, Smalltalk as a factor in entrepreneurial success and lots of other interesting things. GLASS podcasts

It’s funny James just released a recording of Dale’s talk about GLASS 2.0 from this year’s ESUG just yesterday. We’ve recorded a podcast episode on Gemstone and GLASS with Norbert Hartl  for our Smalltalk Inspect Podcast (in German) just recently.
It is currently being edited and should be released pretty soon. So if you like what you hear from Dale and would like to learn more about Gemstone/S and GLASS from a user, be sure to check back here or on Smalltalk Inspect.

Smalltalk Inspect Episode 9: Claus Gittinger über Smalltalk/X

Noch kurz vor der ESUG haben wir gestern die Episode 9 von Smalltalk Inspect veröffentlicht. Diesmal sprechen wir mit Claus Gittinger von der Exept Software AG über deren Smalltalk-Umgebung Smalltalk/X, die in vielerlei Hinsicht eine besonders interessante Smalltalk-Umgebung ist. Zum Beispiel, weil sie sehr eng mit C-Code integriert werden kann. Claus gibt uns einen Einblick in seine Sicht auf den Smalltalk-Markt, und erklärt, warum es nur in Smalltalk möglich ist, ein Produkt wie Expecco zu entwickeln.

Smalltalk Inspect 8: Smalltalk auf Wolke 7

Nach einer urlaubsbedingt etwas längeren Pause ist nun unser neuestes Machwerk verfügbar. Wir sprechen mit Thomas Holzer über HRworks, eine seit über 10 Jahren verfügbare SaaS-Plattform zur Reisekostenabrechnung mit rund 80000 Usern, die vollständig in Smalltalk und mit einer Objekt-Datenbank realisiert ist.

Wir gehen also der Frage nach, wie Smalltalk in die Cloud passt, und was für Vorteile man für eine Smalltalk-Anwendung aus einer Cloud-Plattform ziehen kann.

Diesmal haben wir mit unseren Hörern ein kleines Experiment vor: Wir haben gehört, dass einigen Hörern kürzere Episoden lieber wären. Wir haben aber in dieser Episode nichts mehr gefunden, was herausgenommen werden könnte, ohne das Thema zu beschneiden. Deshalb haben wir nun zwei Versionen der Episode erstellt:

Es gibt keinen inhaltlichen Unterschied zwischen den beiden Teilen. Wir hoffen, nun über Eure Downloadzahlen und/oder Kommentare zu erfahren, was besser passt: 45 Minuten am Stück oder S-Bahn-taugliche Häppchen.


Podcasting and High-Tech

This morning we recorded a new episode for Smalltalk Inspect (which you’ll have to wait for a few days due to holiday season).

Since I am in a Hotel in Zurich this week I was unsure whether recording a Skype session would work in acceptable quality.

So I wasn’t really too surprised when I found out that I’d get a constant hum on the recording, but only for my voice. I used the very same headset I always use and  the hum was also there when I recorded directly from the Headset. So it was not a Skype or network issue. I was just about to accept the hum when I eventually found out that the reason was the MagSafe power supply which was connected to the MB pro. Once unplugged and running on battery, the quality was perfect.

Hmm. Not what I’d expect from a premium-priced product. Maybe it’s because there are some differences in the frequency between German and Swiss power.

On the other hand, we had decided we’d keep the episode short. So my laptop forced us to ;-)

Also, Sebastian’s voice was always interrupted and delayed on my side, to an extend that you couldn’t understand whole sentences. But he could hear me perfectly clear.

Eventually he said “Maybe I should try using Ethernet instead of WiFi”. I am glad he did, because all worked out quite well, and the sound quality of our raw material is excellent.

Oh, the niceties of high-tech…
